How to Get a Hotline Number for Your Business in Bangladesh

Short code, IP number, or a mobile SIM? What each option costs, how long it takes, and which one a Bangladeshi SME should actually pick for a customer hotline.

“We need a hotline number.” It is one of the first things a growing business in Bangladesh says, and one of the most confusing to act on, because three very different things get called a hotline. This article sorts them out and tells you which to pick.

The three kinds of “hotline number”

1. A short code (16xxx / 09666-style)

The five-digit numbers big brands advertise (banks, telecom operators, large e-commerce) are short codes allocated by BTRC. They are easy to remember and look impressive. They are also a separate regulatory process: an application to BTRC, allocation fees, recurring charges, and a telecom partner to terminate the calls. For a small or mid-size business the timeline is months and the cost is far beyond what the hotline earns back.

2. A mobile SIM

The cheapest and fastest option: buy a SIM, print the number on the signboard. It works until the day it doesn’t: the phone is with one person, it is busy when a second customer calls, nobody knows who answered what, and when that employee leaves, the number leaves with them.

3. An IP number (096-series)

An IP phone number from a BTRC-licensed IPTSP operator, attached to a Cloud PBX. It is a normal 11-digit number anyone can dial, but behind it you get extensions for every staff member, an IVR menu, multiple simultaneous calls, recording, and reports. It takes about a day to set up and costs from ৳500 a month.

Side-by-side

Short code Mobile SIM IP number + Cloud PBX
Time to get Months Same day About 24 hours
Upfront cost High (BTRC fees + partner setup) SIM price ৳0–৳1,000 setup
Monthly cost High recurring fees Package cost ৳500–৳1,000
Simultaneous callers Depends on the backend you build 1 2–10 channels
“Press 1 for sales” menu If you build it No Included
Who answered which call If you build it Nobody knows Full call history
Call recording If you build it No Add-on from ৳99/month
Works when staff are at home If you build it Only that one phone Yes
Easy to remember Very Depends Standard; premium numbers available

The honest summary: a short code is a brand asset for companies with a call centre already behind it. For everyone else, an IP number is the hotline, and it comes with the call centre built in.

What a good SME hotline looks like

Whatever number you choose, customers judge the hotline on four things. An IP number with a Cloud PBX handles all four by default:

  1. It gets answered. With 2–10 channels, a second and third caller ring through to other staff instead of hearing “busy”. Set an after-hours greeting so late callers hear your opening times instead of silence.
  2. It routes correctly. An IVR menu: “press 1 for orders, 2 for delivery, 3 for returns”, sends each caller to the right extension. Here is how to set up an IVR with Bangla script examples.
  3. It sounds professional. A recorded greeting by a voice artist costs ৳150 as a caller tune and does more for first impressions than any logo.
  4. You can check what happened. Call history shows every call, who took it, and how long it lasted. Add call recording and you can settle “but you promised…” disputes in a minute.

Costs for a typical hotline

Say you are an e-commerce business with five support staff taking about 80 calls a day, mostly incoming.

  • Plan: Cloud PBX Pro: 10 extensions, 5 channels, ৳750/month
  • Incoming calls: free
  • Outgoing call-backs: maybe 600 minutes/month × 35 paisa + VAT ≈ ৳242
  • Recording: ৳199/month
  • Caller tune: ৳150 once

Roughly ৳1,190 a month for a hotline that five people answer, with a menu, recordings, and reports. Try your own numbers in the bill calculator.

Steps to launch your hotline this week

  1. Decide the menu. Two to four options at most. Write what callers should hear in Bangla and English.
  2. Message us with your staff count. We suggest a plan and reserve a 096 number, tell us if you want a memorable one.
  3. Send documents (NID, photo, trade license) for number registration.
  4. We configure extensions, IVR, and the greeting. Staff install Zoiper or plug in IP phones.
  5. Publish the number on your website, Facebook page, invoices, and packaging, and keep the old mobile number forwarding to it for a few months.

If you expect more than ten agents or want a supervisor view, look at the call center solution page; it is the same system sized up.

FAQ

Can a small business get a 16xxx short code in Bangladesh?

Technically any company can apply to BTRC, but the fees, timeline, and the requirement to have a telecom backend make it impractical for SMEs. An IP number gives you the same customer-facing hotline in a day.

Can I forward my hotline to a mobile number?

Yes. Incoming calls to your IP number can be forwarded to a mobile number as a fallback, useful after hours or if the office internet drops.

Will the hotline show a proper caller ID when I call customers back?

Yes. Outgoing calls from any extension show your 096 business number, not the staff member’s personal mobile.

Do I need a separate number for each branch?

No. One number with an IVR option per branch (“press 1 for Dhaka, 2 for Chattogram”) works well and keeps advertising simple. You can add separate numbers later if you want.
