Getting an IP number in Bangladesh takes about a day, and almost every delay we see comes from one blurry photo or a mismatched name. This is the complete checklist for registering a 096 number with a BTRC-licensed operator through IPCallBD, with a plain description of what an accepted copy looks like and the reasons submissions bounce.
Why documents are required at all
Every IP telephony number must be registered to an identified person or business. BTRC requires the licensed operator to verify who owns each number, the same way a mobile SIM is registered to an NID with biometrics. The operator cannot activate a number without a complete file, and neither can we. The upside is that a registered number is legally yours: it appears on invoices and signboards, and it stays with your business if staff change.
If you want the background on who the licensed operators are, see IPTSP operators in Bangladesh.
The checklist
For a business (company, shop, clinic, agency)
| Document | Details |
|---|---|
| Trade license | Current year, from the city corporation, pourashava, or union parishad. Both pages if it has two. |
| NID of the proprietor or authorised person | Both sides, in one image each. Smart card or paper NID both accepted. |
| Passport-size photo of the same person | Recent, plain background. A phone photo against a wall is fine if it is clear. |
| Mobile number and email | Working ones; the operator may send a verification code. |
| TIN certificate | Only if the operator asks, usually for limited companies. |
For a limited company add the certificate of incorporation and a short authorisation letter on letterhead naming the person who signs for the company.
For an individual or a very new business
If you do not have a trade license yet (a new Facebook shop, a freelancer, a consultant), a number can be registered in your own name with:
- NID (both sides)
- Passport-size photo
- Mobile number and email
You can transfer the number to the business later when the trade license arrives. Tell us at the time so we note it on the file.
For NGOs, schools, and institutions
Use the institution’s registration certificate in place of the trade license, plus the NID and photo of the head or an authorised officer, and an authorisation letter.
What an accepted copy looks like
Operators review copies by eye. These are the rules that get a file through first time:
- Flat and square. Lay the document on a table, shoot from directly above. Not held in a hand, not at an angle.
- All four corners visible. A cropped edge is a rejection.
- Readable at phone zoom. You should be able to read the NID number and the trade license number without guessing. If your phone camera struggles, use a scanning app that flattens and sharpens.
- No glare. Turn off the flash. Daylight from a window is best.
- Colour, not black and white. Photocopies of photocopies are the most common rejection.
- Current. A trade license from last year is expired on 1 July. Renew it first.
Send the images on WhatsApp as photos or PDFs. We check them before submission and tell you the same hour if anything needs a retake.
Why submissions get rejected
From our own files, the reasons in order of frequency:
- Blurry or cut-off NID. Retake it flat, in daylight.
- Name mismatch. The trade license says “Rahman Enterprise”, the NID belongs to the proprietor’s brother, and nothing links them. Use the NID of the person named on the license, or add an authorisation letter.
- Expired trade license. Renew, then resubmit.
- One side of the NID missing. The back has the address; it is required.
- Photo rejected. Sunglasses, a cap, or a group photo. Plain and recent.
A rejection costs a day. Getting it right costs five minutes.
How long it takes
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| You send documents on WhatsApp | 5 minutes |
| We check and submit to the operator | Same working day |
| Operator verification | A few hours to one working day |
| Number activated, PBX configured, logins sent | Same day as approval |
In most cases the number is live within 24 hours of a complete file. Fridays and public holidays add a day.
What you get after approval
- Your 096 number, registered to the business
- A Cloud PBX account with extensions for each staff member, your IVR, and the portal login. The corporate IP number page describes what is included.
- Zoiper logins (username, password, domain) for each extension, sent on WhatsApp. Setup takes five minutes per phone with the Zoiper guide.
- A recharge balance you top up with bKash, Nagad, Rocket, or a card. The number itself is free; plans start at ৳500 a month, as shown on the pricing page.
Changing details later
- Moving the number to a new company name: send the new trade license and an authorisation letter. The operator updates the registration; the number does not change.
- Changing the authorised person: new NID, new photo, and a letter from the business. Do this when the person who registered the number leaves.
- Adding numbers: a second or third number for another branch or brand uses the same file, so it is usually approved within hours.
Keep a copy of what you submitted. If the business is ever audited or if you move providers, the registration documents prove the number is yours.
FAQ
Can I get an IP number without a trade license?
Yes, in an individual’s name using NID and a photo. You can transfer it to the business when the trade license is issued.
Do I need to visit an office or give biometrics?
No. Documents are submitted as images, and verification is done on the operator’s side. Unlike a mobile SIM, there is no fingerprint step.
Can the number be registered in an employee’s name?
It can, but you should not do it. Register it to the business or the owner, so it stays with the business when the employee leaves.
Is a photocopy of the NID acceptable?
A clear colour photo or scan of the original card is what operators accept. Black-and-white photocopies are frequently rejected.
How long is the number valid?
As long as the plan is active. There is no yearly re-registration; keep your trade license current and the number stays registered.
