Every business in Bangladesh has sent a bulk SMS. Fewer have tried voice SMS, a recorded message delivered as a phone call, and most who do are surprised by the difference in response. Neither is always right. This is a plain comparison so you can pick the one that fits each message.
What each one is
Bulk SMS is a text message sent to many numbers from a masking (brand name) or non-masking sender ID. The customer reads it whenever they open their messages, if the phone’s spam filter doesn’t hide it first.
Voice SMS is a phone call. The customer’s phone rings, shows your business number, and when they answer, your recorded message plays. With IPCallBD it goes out from your own 096 number and is billed per second at the normal call rate, there is no separate platform fee. For large, scheduled campaigns with reports and an API, the same idea becomes Bulk Voice Call.
Where voice wins
Attention
A ringing phone is answered or deliberately declined; a text is passively ignored. For messages that must be noticed (a payment due tomorrow, an appointment time, an exam date change) voice is the safer bet.
Bangla, without the font problem
Bangla SMS still renders badly on many feature phones and some Android handsets, and Unicode Bangla uses 70 characters per segment, so a two-sentence message is often billed as three or four SMS. A voice message is just audio: perfect Bangla on every phone, one call.
Trust
Customers in Bangladesh get a lot of scam texts. A call from the same business number they already know, in a familiar voice, reads as legitimate in a way a text from a masked sender ID does not.
Older and less literate customers
If part of your customer base doesn’t read comfortably, common for consumer businesses outside the big cities, a voice message is the only one that lands.
Where SMS wins
Anything the customer needs to keep
OTPs, order numbers, tracking links, invoice amounts, addresses. Nobody remembers a 6-digit code from a voice call. If the message contains something to copy or tap, send a text.
Quiet contexts
A text can be read in a meeting, in class, or in a mosque. A call cannot be answered there. For purely informational notices with no urgency, SMS is more polite.
Very high volume, very low value
A “we’re open today” blast to 50,000 numbers is cheaper as SMS and doesn’t warrant interrupting anyone.
Cost, honestly
The units differ, so here is a like-for-like.
- Bulk SMS in Bangladesh is usually priced per segment (160 English characters or 70 Bangla characters), with masking sender IDs costing more than non-masking. A two-sentence Bangla message often costs two or three segments.
- Voice SMS with IPCallBD is 35 paisa + 15% VAT per minute, billed per second. A 20-second message costs about 13 paisa per answered call. Unanswered calls cost nothing.
For short Bangla messages, voice is frequently cheaper per delivered message than SMS, and dramatically cheaper per message actually read.
A simple rule
If the customer needs to remember or tap something, send SMS. If the customer needs to notice something, send voice. If it matters, send both, voice first, SMS as the record.
The “both” pattern is the one serious businesses settle on: a voice call the day before a due date, and an SMS with the amount and bKash number right after.
Use cases, sorted
| Message | Send as |
|---|---|
| OTP, order ID, tracking link | SMS |
| “Delivery tomorrow, please be available” | Voice |
| Fee due on the 10th | Voice, then SMS with amount |
| Eid offer announcement | Voice (or Bulk Voice Call for large lists) |
| Appointment confirmation | Voice |
| Class cancelled today | Voice + SMS |
| Thank you for your order | SMS |
| Collection reminder to overdue accounts | Voice |
How to start with voice SMS
- Record a message: 15–30 seconds, business name in the first sentence, one clear action. A voice artist recording is ৳150 if you want it polished.
- Pick the recipients. A few numbers or a list.
- Send from your business number. Customers see your 096 number and can call back to reach your Cloud PBX.
- Check the report: who answered and for how long.
If you’ll send more than a few hundred a month, or want scheduling and an API, move up to Bulk Voice Call at ৳250/month. Our bulk voice guide has a worked cost example.
FAQ
Does voice SMS work on button phones?
Yes. It is a normal incoming call, so any phone that can receive calls will play it.
Can customers call back?
Yes. The call comes from your real business number, so a callback reaches your team, unlike an SMS from a masking ID, which cannot be replied to.
Can I send voice SMS in Bangla and English together?
Yes. Record whatever you like; many businesses do one Bangla sentence followed by a short English line.
Is voice SMS the same as a robocall?
Technically similar, it is an automated call with a recording. The difference is in use: a short, relevant message to your own customers from your real number, not a cold blast to strangers.
